Position Summary

The Aquatic Coordinator will be cross disciplined in all aspects of the Aquatics department including Lifeguarding, Swim Lessons, Aquatic Group Exercise, and Coaching. In addition to the duties of each aquatic area, this position will assist in general aquatic administration, scheduling, programming, and staff oversight. This position requires set am or pm hours as directed by the Aquatics Manager.

Essential Functions

  • To know, explain & exemplify the mission, purpose, & values of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army (TSA).
  • Provide direct oversight, training, & scheduling of aquatic staff & day to day operations of the aquatic facility.
  • Provide direct oversight of aquatic programming including Aquatics Safety & Education classes, Group Exercise, Instructional programs, Competitive swimming, Events & others as assigned.
  • Maintain a physical deck presence during programming & peak use times, including mornings, nights, weekends.
  • May be required to instruct, coach, or lifeguard aquatic programs.
  • Research and assist in the development of new aquatic programs.
  • Assist with creation, development, & implementation of staff professional & personal development plan.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that they meet the needs of the patrons and the community.
  • Schedule and run various aquatic exercise clinics and conferences
  • Prepare and complete various forms, reports, correspondence, training reports/records, statistical data, aquatic reports, surveys, class registration forms, progress reports, policies, procedures, charts, or other documents.
  • Administrative duties include preparing and reviewing written information related to training, class registrations, incidents/accidents, volunteer needs and calendar of events.
  • Establish & maintain staff training manuals and Emergency Action Plans for the aquatics department.
  • Assist with regular preventative maintenance and ongoing operational support and upkeep of all pools, supplies and equipment.
  • Perform set up and breakdown of facility equipment as needed.
  • Report deck defects, necessary repairs, etc., completing all necessary records & reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective means of staff communication.
  • Monitor aquatic inventory and ensure availability of adequate material to conduct programming. Initiate orders for new or replacement materials.
  • Provide great customer service to the community; see that all customers, clients and members are given prompt and courteous service.
  • Considerately and patiently enforce RJKCCC rules to provide a safe environment for all members, visitors, and employees. Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas and actions. Maintain order in swimming areas.
  • Must be able to analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action; maintain constant observation of an assigned area to identify any signs of danger.
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and provide appropriate care if needed, including first aid, rescue breathing and CPR.
  • Inspect and maintain cleanliness of swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, trash cans, cleaning equipment, aquatic equipment storage areas, and other areas as assigned.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers in person and over the phone.
  • Carry out The Salvation Army mission in your actions and words during your employment.
  • Ability to speak and communicate with both small and large groups of people with poise and enthusiasm.
  • Be on time and prepared to teach your class or other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions needed and ability to ensure compliance/ adherence by all class members.
  • Must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Aquatics Manager and always exhibit a professional appearance while on duty.
  • Knowledge of how to implement water chemical tests as determined by the Operating Procedures.
  • Assist/Attend staff meetings as assigned.
  • Other tasks as required & assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to swim 500 yards continuously under 10 minutes.
  • Ability to demonstrate all four competitive strokes and racing starts.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of all the aquatic areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience and 2+ years of related experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, aquatic coach, and/or aquatic group exercise instructor, preferably with some experience overseeing people or programs.
  • Must possess and maintain current certificates in American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) or above; CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro), Oxygen Administration, and Lifeguarding.
  • Prefer candidates with Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate from nationally recognized organization or verify enrollment in first 90 days of hire.
  • Prefer American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
  • Possess significant experience working at a large public pool facility.
  • Documented knowledge of principles and techniques of aquatic instruction and coaching, Safety protocol (First Aid, CPR, water rescues & lifeguarding); personnel and program supervision; and facility oversight.

  • Must be able to work varied shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and split shifts.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Demonstrate the ability to relate positively and energetically with staff, clients, members and customers. Ability to be self-motivated, work independently and in a team environment. Must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public.
  • Ability to prioritize and address projects, which may conflict, in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Ability to analyze problems and reach acceptable and workable solutions; implement effectively.
  • Ability to present oneself in a professional manner; ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in relation to information and documentation.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate well in English required; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Have a philosophy of education that is consistent with that of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army.
  • Can work with children, adults, and other staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education.
  • Must have the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance.
