Position description

The Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences is committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students. The office is recruiting for the role of Director, Physician Wellness.

UC San Diego Health seeks in its Physician Wellness Director an inspirational, visionary leader with a deep understanding of the key opportunities and challenges in addressing issues of physician wellness. In addition to amplifying the programs already underway, the incumbent will foster new initiatives to address physician burnout and improve physician wellbeing. The Director's primary goal is to further develop an extraordinary physician wellness culture at UC San Diego while positioning the university as a leader in physician wellness.

The Director leads the physician wellness programs at UC San Diego Health, providing overall strategic and intellectual direction for its initiatives, administrative structure, allocation of financial resources, and reviews of multidisciplinary wellness efforts. The incumbent is responsible for creating and sustaining productive relationships with leaders across UC San Diego to ensure that initiatives are informed by and address the needs of all practitioners and staff at UC San Diego Health and faculty across Health Sciences and the campus at large. The Director works closely with a broad community of leaders also engaged in wellness activities across multiple departments and clinical environments, aligning programmatic efforts to ensure proper financial stewardship and evaluate outcomes of goals and milestones.

Reporting to the chair of the Physician Wellness Oversight Committee, with secondary reporting to the Health System CEO, the Director partners with academic and clinical leaders to expand existing physician wellness programs at UC San Diego Health, spearheads new initiatives that address barriers to physician wellbeing, fosters activities that lead to research and scholarship in the areas of physician wellness, and provides advice and counsel to Health- and Health Sciences-wide committees, as appropriate. The Director chairs the Physician Wellness Steering Committee, which advises on programmatic plans for UC San Diego Health and provides oversight and coordination of these activities to ensure efficiency, efficacy, and transparency.

The Director manages the administrative operations of the physician wellness administrative teams, and monitors the administrative functions of key wellness programs budgeted through wellness office (e.g. HEAR, Physician Peer Support, and Headspace Care). The Director provides functional direction on priority projects, ensuring appropriate financial oversight, and liaising with the Oversight Committee to ensure alignment with the broader UC San Diego Health mission and vision. The Director will have a collegial, consultative management style, with the ability to be strong and decisive while also considering the needs and perspectives of a diverse academic community. The Director will collaborate, delegate and make difficult and timely decisions based on well-considered input. The Director will have a high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.

The Director is expected to allocate up to 40 percent effort toward the role, with the incumbent's remaining time spent in clinical care, education, or research.

The appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's background and experience. Application materials must be submitted through the UC San Diego online application system.
