Job Summary

The Chabot - Las Positas Community College District is seeking applicants for a PT Counselor/Coordinator, Change It Now! part-time pool.  The Change It Now! learning community, established in 2009 by Language Arts Faculty, helps students become leaders and achieve their academic goals by using an interdisciplinary, anti-racist, social justice framework. Change It Now! Our program aims to deliver academically rigorous and engaging transfer level courses in English and Sociology, foster student agency and civic engagement. Students participate in college and community events, attend field trips and receive academic counseling. The CIN program works in partnership with the NextUp program which serves Chabot College students impacted by the foster care system to examine issues that impact the lives of NextUp students.

The CIN Counselor Coordinator is responsible for six general areas: providing counseling support to students by developing, supporting and sustaining outreach and recruitment, creating and sustaining student education plans; coordinating with CIN Faculty, NextUP and relevant areas of the college; program development; planning and facilitating extracurricular program activities with the CIN Faculty Leadership team; vision and mission development of program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the counseling faculty lead of Change It Now! The Social Justice Learning Community at Chabot;
  2. Provide individualized counseling and education planning to Change It Now! students;
  3. Facilitate workshops related to transfer planning, campus resources, and personal development;
  4. Coordinate field trips and college tours; 
  5. Collaborate and supervise Counseling Assistant and any student assistants; 
  6. Evaluate programs, activities and services in support of program and institutional effectiveness; 
  7. Develop, maintain and support CIN! program vision;
  8. Develop, maintain and coordinate CIN! program budget. Including hiring and paying any CIN! classified staff, ensuring stipend payments for CIN! faculty and manage reimbursements and invoices;
  9. Coordinate with faculty and staff in Change It Now!, including weekly or bi-weekly meetings, fall and summer retreats, phone calls and emails to share information about the students, the program, the curriculum and other facets related to the CIN! Community;
  10. Coordinate and plan with CIN! faculty and staff to ensure the program is meeting its goals and completing its committed activities;
  11. Coordinate with areas of college relevant to CIN! faculty, staff and students, particularly with the Next Up program;
  12. Develop, build and maintain relationships with high schools in Chabot’s service area;
  13. Develop, build and maintain relationships with community- based organizations;
  14. Organize and attend outside events with students such as: career exploration events, author readings, cultural events, film screenings, rallies or demonstrations;
  15. Organize and attend college campus tours;
  16. Help to market and promote the program both on and off campus. Create updated materials, organize and prepare current and past CIN! students to visit local high schools and campus classrooms to discuss CIN! and Chabot;
  17. Evaluate program success by participating in annual program review process and statewide data collection activities;
  18. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Evidence of understanding of and responsiveness to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  1. Social justice issues, anti-racism and equity;
  2. Experience and interest in working with current and former foster youth;
  3. Principles and practices of project management, program planning and implementation;
  4. Tracking and developing budgets;
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills;
  6. Evidence of sensitivity and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds of the community college students and the community at large.

Ability to:

  1. Participate in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating assigned program and areas, including the development of programmatic goals and objectives;
  2. Perform responsible and difficult programmatic and administrative duties involving the use of independent judgement and personal initiative;
  3. Meet and collaborate with college and community agency representatives;
  4. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
