Job Summary

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a PT Instructor, Sign Language, American for Las Positas College.  Applicants will be expected to provide instruction in: American Sign Language 1A, American Sign Language 1B, and possibly American Sign Language 2A and 2B in future semesters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach in-person and on-campus a variety of courses during the day and/or evening. May also include online courses.
  2. Have completed Distance Education teaching training and have experience teaching with Canvas.
  3. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
  4. Participate in Adjunct faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, and program review.
  5. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, and keep posted office hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.

Evidence of understanding of and responsiveness to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices within the classroom.

Applicants applying under the “Equivalent” provision must provide details that explain at time of application how their academic preparation is the equivalent of the degree listed above.  

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in the American Sign Language learning discipline, especially as it relates to the relevancy of students' lives, interests, and communities.

Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, gender identity, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.

Teach courses in American Sign Language. Instructor must be fluent in ASL and the American Manual Alphabet. Prepare students to communicate with and interpret for deaf people.
